Thailand Cannabis Law 2025: Prescription Rules | Siam Green
July 2025: Thailand’s New Cannabis Regulations
By Siam Green · 16 July 2025 · Updated 29 June 2026

Big changes are rolling through Thailand’s cannabis landscape. As of June 2025, the government has reclassified cannabis as a controlled substance, meaning you’ll now need a doctor’s prescription to legally purchase or consume it.
For many of us who have embraced the plant’s benefits, this sudden shift feels frustrating, confusing, and even disheartening. But rather than panic, this is a moment to adapt, organize, and elevate the conversation.
Here’s everything you need to know, and how Siam Green is stepping up.
What’s Changed?
Thailand, once hailed as Asia’s cannabis pioneer, has implemented new rules that restrict access to cannabis products unless they’re medically prescribed. Key updates include:
- Prescriptions required: Only certified healthcare professionals (doctors, pharmacists, dentists, and traditional healers) can issue a prescription for cannabis use, valid for up to 30 days. Siam Green can issue you these through our in house doctors at each branch.
- Strict dispensary compliance: Shops must now operate as medical dispensaries, complete with certified staff and controlled inventory tracking. All cannabis flower must be purchased from licensed cannabis facilities with quality certificates such as GACP or GAP.
- Something that hasn’t changed but needs to be re-emphasized: Smoking in public remains illegal! Please be responsible and do not smoke around public areas, or groups of people.
What This Means for You
If you’re a long-time medical user or a conscious canna-curious newcomer, this means one thing: you’ll need a prescription to continue your cannabis journey, legally and safely.

How to Get a Medical Cannabis Prescription in Thailand | Siam Green
Medical cannabis in Thailand
How to get a medical cannabis prescription in Thailand
Cannabis is legal in Thailand for medical use only, and every purchase needs a valid prescription on the Thai form ภ.ท.33, written "PT 33" in English. Here is what the prescription is, who can get one, and how the visit works, whether you live here or you are visiting.
This page is general information about the Thai medical-cannabis framework, not medical advice. Whether cannabis is right for you is a decision for the licensed practitioner who assesses you.

What the ภ.ท.33 (PT 33) prescription is
Cannabis flower is a controlled herb under Thai Ministry of Public Health rules. It is legal for medical use only, and to buy it you need a valid medical-cannabis prescription on form ภ.ท.33. A licensed practitioner issues the prescription, and it is valid for up to a 30-day supply.
Who can get one, visitors included
Anyone aged 20 or older can be assessed, visitors from outside Thailand included. The decision rests entirely on the practitioner's medical assessment during your consultation. Prescriptions and medical cards from other countries are not valid in Thailand, so you are assessed here. Carrying cannabis across the border in either direction is prohibited.
How the visit works
- Walk in to any Siam Green branch during opening hours and speak with the team. No appointment is needed.
- A licensed practitioner runs a short consultation and assessment on site.
- If cannabis is medically appropriate for you, the practitioner issues your ภ.ท.33 (PT 33) prescription, valid for up to a 30-day supply.
What to bring
- A passport or photo ID.
- Proof you are 20 or older, which your passport or ID covers.
- Nothing from home is required. A prescription or medical card from another country is not valid here anyway.
Rules worth knowing while you are here
- Public consumption is prohibited and can lead to fines.
- Keep everything in its original labelled packaging, together with your prescription.
- Do not carry cannabis across the border in either direction.
